Pittsburgh Pirates Set Major League Record of 17 Consecutive Losing Seasons

The Pittsburgh Pirates broke the Philadelphia Phillies record of futility today September 7, 2009 for consecutive losing seasons with 17 with a 4-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The Phillies team set the old record from 1933-1948.

The franchise of Honus Wagner, Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski and Willie Stargell deserves a better fate. As long as teams can make money by losing records of futility for once great franchises will continue.
